June 2025: 5.1 trillion cigarettes were sold in the world in 2024
In 2024, global sales volume of legal cigarettes reached 5.1 trillion sticks – 47% of which (2.4 trillion sticks) was sold in China alone. Outside China, fifteen countries and regions recorded over 50 billion sticks sales volume, accounting for 60.3% of the global total. Indonesia (292.5 billion sticks), Russia (176.5 billion sticks) and the United States (166.6 billion sticks) held the Top-3 positions in terms of volume. Turkey, Japan, Egypt, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Philippines, Germany, Italy, Ukraine, South Korea and Vietnam are the other major (Top-15) cigarette markets. Global sales volume, outside China, decreased by -1.2% year-on-year basis while the turnover increased +1.5 to $514 billion – a pack of cigarette fetching $3.8 per pack on average at the retail (up +2.7% year-on-year basis).
