October 2024: Researchers found no nicotine or nicotine analogs in Sensa vape samples
Sensa vape launched by RJ Reynolds Vapor Company (RJRVC), an operating company of Reynolds American Inc. (London-based British American Tobacco’s U.S. subsidiary), on July 1, 2024 is the first disposable “zero nicotine vapor product” from a major tobacco company. Accordingly, the Sensa vape launch attracts the attention of not only the consumers but also the researchers and anti-tobacco groups.
What is in Sensa vape?
According to a recently published study1, the chemical characterization, conducted by the Rutgers Institute, Yale University & Duke University researchers, reveals that all Sensa flavors (except Berry Watermelon Fusion) found neotame (a potent artificial sweetener that is 7,000–13,000 times sweeter than sugar) and WS-23 (a synthetic coolant) in all samples, while all “Frost” flavors tested contained another synthetic coolant, WS-3. However, neither nicotine nor the nicotine analogs (like 6-methylnicotine or nicotinamide) were detected in any sample.

Researchers also underline that Sensa’s “food-grade flavorings designed for an adult palate” claim is misleading as food safety determinations do not extend to inhalation safety.
