As the modern oral nicotine formats like pouches are currently banned in India, the partnership aims to navigate regulatory restrictions and tap into India’s massive smokeless nicotine demand. PMI is the foreign promoter shareholder in GPI and fully owns Aspeya.

Citing health ministry assessments that HTPs still expose users and bystanders to harmful compounds, local governments in major cities like Tokyo and Osaka are expanding no-smoking zones to include heated tobacco. The move threatens to reduce the social visibility and viability of heated tobacco in Japan, which currently stands as the world’s largest market for the category.

Global Tobacco Control
Philip Morris International (PMI) is facing public health backlash over a global “I AM Marlboro” advertising campaign spanning at least 20 countries, which critics argue contradicts the company’s stated goal of transitioning to a smoke-free future. The campaign utilizes lifestyle and identity-focused messaging intended to support volume resilience amid a structural decline in global combustible volumes and rising competition from JT and KT&G. The rollout highlights PMI’s dual-track strategy of funding its smoke-free transformation by maintaining the commercial strength of its core cash-generating cigarette brand.
