Generational Tobacco Ban
Vietnam’s Ministry of Health has proposed a lifetime tobacco ban for anyone born on or after January 1, 2010, aiming to create a permanent “smoke-free generation.” The strict draft reforms also seek a comprehensive ban on all e-cigarettes and heated tobacco products, alongside prohibition of retail displays to curb youth exposure. If the proposal is passed by the National Assembly later this year, Vietnam will join the United Kingdom and the Maldives in pursuing generational tobacco phaseouts.

UK: Vapes
The UK vaping market has reached a major milestone as vapers now outnumber cigarette smokers for the first time, accounting for roughly 10% of the adult population (5.4 million people). Following the June 2025 disposable vape ban, the market has rapidly transitioned toward rechargeable, pod-based, and longer-life “big puff” systems, with the segment turnover doubling to a £1.3 billion annual value. The category is entering a mature phase led by independent retailers and supermarkets adapting to the post-disposable landscape.

Southeast Asia: Tobacco Market
British American Tobacco (BAT) Malaysia reported its first-ever quarterly loss for the period ending March 31, 2026 as revenue plunged 50.2% year-on-year. The financial decline was heavily driven by rising operational and compliance costs associated with Malaysia’s retail tobacco display ban, coupled with a major restructuring initiative. Additionally, illegal cigarette activity rebounded to claim 56.7% of the total market volume, further depressing legal combustible sales and forcing the company to slash its interim dividend.

US FDA – Tobacco: News
Major tobacco companies Reynolds American (BAT) and Altria are pushing the FDA for clearer, more predictable standards on flavored vape approvals, arguing the current framework remains too vague and restrictive. While the FDA recently authorized its first non-tobacco flavored e-cigarettes (mango and blueberry from Glas Inc.) and signaled openness to adult-centric flavors like coffee or spice, it maintains strict scrutiny on fruit and sweet options. The industry argues a transparent pathway is vital to transition adult smokers to regulated alternatives, while public health groups warn that loosening restrictions could renew youth vaping risks.

USA: Nicotine Pouches
The U.S. nicotine pouch market is facing a potential “race to the bottom” as intense competition brings heavy discounting and aggressive promotional offers to retail shelves. To prevent this from permanently eroding profit margins, major manufacturers are shifting away from base price cuts toward multi-pack bundling and targeted digital loyalty apps. Ultimately, the market’s highly consolidated structure – dominated by a few major players with long-term strategic patience – acts as a critical guardrail against the panic-driven price wars previously seen in the vaping sector.

Canada: Cigarette Market
Canada’s third legislative review of the Tobacco and Vaping Products Act concluded that stronger enforcement is urgently needed to curb a rapidly expanding illicit market. While the report proposed tougher penalties, increased inspections, and AI monitoring to address enforcement gaps, industry stakeholders argue it understates the true scale of the problem. According to a recent KPMG report, non-regulated and illegal products now make up 38% of the Canadian tobacco market, costing governments up to CAD$2.1 billion in uncollected tax revenue.

South Korea: Vapes
South Korea is experiencing a rise in homemade e-cigarette liquids – locally termed “liquid kimjang” – following a March 2026 amendment that expanded the legal definition of tobacco and introduced a hefty surtax of ₩1,823 per milliliter. This new regulation could quadruple commercial retail prices, driving consumers to online mixing communities to share recipes and bypass costs. However, health officials are raising alarms over the practice due to risks of contamination, improper nicotine concentrations, and the addition of unregulated substances.
