Generational Tobacco Ban

Turkey, the fourth largest cigarette market in the world, is preparing a landmark anti-tobacco bill featuring a generational ban that will permanently prohibit anyone born on or after January 1, 2015, from ever legally purchasing or consuming tobacco products. The comprehensive legislative package also introduces a specialized “health tax” to fund preventive care, expands smoking bans in public recreational spaces, and restricts youth-oriented marketing, including a specific ban on slim cigarettes. Driven by strong domestic support, this historic initiative aims to eliminate tobacco dependency and protect public health for future generations.

Tobacco Regulation: Canada

Canadian Federal Health Minister has rejected industry lobbying to ease restrictions on nicotine pouches, confirming they will remain strictly regulated as smoking-cessation aids sold only behind pharmacy counters. Despite pressure from convenience retailers arguing that wider sales would combat the illicit market, the government maintains limited distribution with tight caps on nicotine strength and flavors to protect youth. Public health advocates strongly support this stance, urging authorities to crack down on unauthorized vendors rather than risking a rise in youth nicotine addiction through easier retail access.

US FDA – Tobacco: News

The U.S. administration is planning to overhaul the review process for e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches to clear a massive regulatory backlog and combat illicit vapes. The proposed changes aim to simplify scientific requirements and shorten review timelines, potentially offering a smoother path to market for flavored products. While proponents argue that faster access to regulated alternatives supports adult harm reduction, public health advocates and some lawmakers strongly criticize the move, warning it could reverse progress against youth nicotine addiction.

Global Vape Market

In August 2026, China’s vape exports reached $979 million – a 3.3% year-over-year increase, though down 6.4% from July due to receding U.S. demand. While shipments to the United States fell 12.4% to $339 million, a 51.4% surge in exports to the United Kingdom and strong gains across other international markets helped offset the decline. Nevertheless, U.S. still retained its position as China’s largest individual destination, accounting for 34.6% of August exports. Overall, cumulative exports for the first eight months of the year rose 5.5% to $6.99 billion.

Germany: Cigarette Market

The German Bundestag has begun deliberating a multi-year legislative package to systematically raise taxes on cigarettes, other tobacco products, and new nicotine products from 2027 to 2030. Driven by the dual goals of filling federal budget gaps and improving public health, the plan will lift the average price of a 20-pack of cigarettes by roughly €3 to €11.36 by 2030 while also increasing taxes on fine-cut tobacco, hookahs, and heated tobacco. However, opponents have strongly criticized the proposal, warning that such steep price hikes will fuel cross-border smuggling and counterfeit markets rather than increasing state revenues.

KT&G: News

KT&G’s Board of Directors has approved a ₩360 billion (US$270 million) plan to buy back and immediately retire approximately 2.07 million shares, or 2% of its total issued stock. This initiative fulfills a commitment from the company’s February announcement and builds on an April move that retired ₩1.8 trillion in treasury shares, allowing KT&G to surpass its 2024-2027 shareholder return targets ahead of schedule. Alongside a higher interim dividend of ₩2,000 per share, the buyback aims to boost earnings per share, strengthen market confidence, and enhance overall shareholder returns.

Turning Point Brands has appointed Executive Chairman David E. Glazek as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1, 2026, succeeding Graham Purdy, who is stepping down for personal reasons after more than twenty years with the company.
