Altria: News

Altria has broken ground on a $250 million, 270,000-square-foot expansion of its U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company facility in Hopkinsville, Kentucky, creating over 200 local jobs. The project will centralize operations by absorbing production from Altria’s Nashville, Tennessee plant, which is scheduled to wind down by early 2028. Unifying flagship moist smokeless brands like Copenhagen and Skoal under one roof, Altria aims to lower fixed costs and optimize supply chain efficiency for the company’s traditional tobacco footprint.

USA: Vapes

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, BAT’s U.S. subsidiary, has initiated a phased rollout of four new non-tobacco Vuse Pro pod flavors at 5.0% nicotine strength, including Fresh Mint, Peach, Berry, and Watermelon. The launch follows updated FDA enforcement priorities that focus federal resources primarily on unauthorized disposable vapes, allowing BAT to expand its portfolio in an attempt to recapture market share from illicit vapes. While public health groups criticize the high-nicotine flavored lineup over youth vaping concerns, BAT maintains that flavor variety is essential for transitioning adult smokers away from combustible cigarettes.

India: Smokeless Tobacco Market

India’s National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) has recommended rejecting all manufacturing and import license applications for oral nicotine pouches, reinforcing the country’s strict stance against recreational nicotine. While non-therapeutic pouches sit outside existing tobacco laws, health authorities classified them as unapproved drug products after detecting illegal sales across online and duty-free channels. The recommendation directs licensing bodies to close regulatory loopholes, preventing manufacturers from leveraging smoking-cessation frameworks to commercialize consumer nicotine pouches.

Tobacco Industry: Acquisitions

Imperial Brands has acquired 100% of Swedish nicotine pouch maker Yoik Group AB, owner of the Helwit brand, for an initial SEK 515 million (£39.8 million) plus performance-based deferred payments. The deal more than doubles Imperial’s modern oral market share in Sweden, where Helwit holds a 3.4% share in Europe’s largest pouch market. The transaction aligns with Imperial’s strategy for targeted bolt-on acquisitions alongside its existing Skruf AB business.

Tobacco Lawsuits: USA

Denver has joined a growing wave of U.S. municipalities suing major tobacco manufacturers under the “polluter pays” principle to recover costs for non-biodegradable plastic filter cleanup. The lawsuit builds on precedents set by Baltimore in 2022 and recent filings by Fresno and Sacramento County to demand financial accountability from the industry. This domestic momentum mirrors pressure in Europe, where Dutch authorities are urging tobacco firms to cover 100% of cigarette butt cleanup expenses while evaluating potential filter bans. Together, these actions mark an escalating global push to hold the industry liable for the environmental toll of cigarette litter.

Patents Wars: USA

A U.S. federal court has rejected Altria Group and NJOY’s constitutional challenge to the International Trade Commission’s (ITC) authority, preserving the agency as a venue for an ongoing patent dispute brought by JUUL Labs. Altria had sought to block the ITC from investigating JUUL’s import ban request against NJOY Daily products, arguing the administrative forum violated constitutional protections. Despite losing the venue challenge, NJOY holds a key substantive advantage after an ITC administrative law judge previously declared JUUL’s patent invalid, with a final determination now pending before the full commission.

Tobacco Regulation: Asia

Taiwan’s Health Promotion Administration is launching a first-of-its-kind vape surrender program in September 2026, establishing 431 anonymous collection sites nationwide for citizens to turn in e-cigarettes without penalty. The initiative comes ahead of pending amendments to the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act that will introduce fines ranging up to NT$100,000 (US$3,000) for simple possession of vapes. Following a one-month grace period, authorities will enforce strict confiscations and penalties to eliminate vaping and curb the spread of synthetic drugs.
