Germany: Cigarette Market

To plug a growing budget deficit, Germany is launching a steep tobacco tax hike that will see retail cigarette prices climb to nearly €11.80 per pack by 2030, exceeding original target increases by 40%. The aggressive measure is projected to generate an additional €800 million in annual tobacco revenue to help offset rising national defense expenditures. While primarily driven by fiscal pressure, officials hope the price hike will also serve as a powerful public health deterrent that brings German cigarette prices closer to neighboring France.

Global Vape Market

E-commerce giant Shopify has implemented a global ban on all vaping product sales on its platform, forcing both unauthorized and fully legal brands off its digital storefront infrastructure. The sweeping decision follows intense pressure from a bipartisan coalition of U.S. state and local law enforcement authorities aiming to curb the online distribution of illicit nicotine products. Having taken full effect in July 2026, the blanket policy leaves merchants worldwide scrambling to migrate their online storefronts to alternative platforms.

US FDA – Tobacco: News

A coalition of national public health organizations has filed a federal lawsuit against the FDA, challenging a May 2026 policy that allows unauthorized e-cigarettes and nicotine pouches to remain on store shelves. The plaintiffs argue that this “enforcement safe harbor” violates federal law by bypassing mandatory scientific reviews and public notice, keeping youth-appealing flavored products on the market for an indefinite amount of time without authorization. Notably, the challenge was filed in the same Maryland federal court that struck down a similar FDA policy in 2017 for fueling the youth vaping epidemic.

Research: Nicotine Pouches

A former FDA toxicologist has raised safety concerns over ZYN nicotine pouches, alleging the agency authorized the products without fully evaluating the pouch material or potential microplastics exposure. While the FDA and manufacturer Philip Morris International (PMI) defend the scientific review process, critics argue the exact composition of the pouches was ignored. The allegations are expected to intensify scrutiny on the rapidly growing pouch market, though no independent research has yet proven that ZYN poses microplastic-related health risks.

JUUL: News

A Delaware judge has cleared the way for a second shareholder lawsuit challenging JUUL Labs’ $1.9 billion rescue deal, declining to dismiss claims of breached fiduciary duties against the company’s board and key investors. The lawsuit alleges that the 2022–2023 recapitalization, which saved the e-cigarette maker from bankruptcy, unfairly diluted existing investors to hand control to a select group of participating backers. The ruling keeps JUUL under legal pressure over the restructuring, following a similar investor lawsuit that was settled in July 2024.

Australia: Cigarette Market

According to a new national survey, daily smoking in Australia has dropped to a historic low of 5.8% while vaping rates have stabilized at 3.6%, pushing overall nicotine use to its lowest recorded level. While health officials credit recent reforms for the decline, the country continues to grapple with a surging illicit market for tobacco and e-cigarette products.

Australia: Nicotine Pouches

Amid a surging illicit market, Australia is completely banning the personal importation and medical prescribing of nicotine pouches starting July 24, 2026. Citing youth appeal and a lack of clinical evidence that these products aid in smoking cessation, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) enacted the strict measures to close existing loopholes and crack down on unlawful supply.

India: Cigarette Market

India’s cigarette industry is bracing for a highly challenging 2026-27 following historic tax hikes, including a GST increase to a flat 40% accompanied by a length-based excise duty and the National Calamity Contingent Duty. Leading manufacturers like ITC and Godfrey Phillips warn that these combined levies will squeeze profit margins and drive price-sensitive consumers toward India’s massive illicit tobacco market. Industry players are pushing for a more balanced fiscal policy, pointing out that legal cigarettes account for just 10% of tobacco consumption but bear over 80% of the tax burden.

India: Smokeless Tobacco Market

India’s customs and health authorities have aligned in a high-stakes legal battle against the Adani Group to halt the illegal sale of imported nicotine pouches, including ZYN, at airport duty-free shops. While Adani argues that international transit zones are exempt from domestic laws, the government insists tax-free status does not grant immunity from public health regulations, setting up a landmark court case that will determine how alternative tobacco products are regulated at India’s borders.

Tobacco Lawsuits: International

A British Columbia court has certified a nationwide class-action lawsuit against JUUL Labs and Altria Group, clearing the way for a major Canadian legal battle over deceptive marketing. Representing Canadian JUUL users since 2018, the suit alleges the companies falsely marketed e-cigarettes as safe and conspired to addict a new generation to nicotine. The court rejected Altria’s attempt to be excluded, ruling that its historical financial ties during the peak of JUUL’s marketing push remain legally relevant.

KT&G: News

KT&G is projected to post strong Q2 2026 earnings, with operating profit expected to rise up to 15% year-on-year to around ₩400 billion. This growth is driven by record-high combustible cigarette shipments to Eurasia and stabilization in the South Korean market where strong next-generation products (NGP) volume growth offsets the structural decline of traditional cigarettes. Beyond the core tobacco operations, supplementary business units are maintaining a focus on structural efficiency.
